The Supreme Ordeal is an alternative term for the Road of Trials.
One function of this stage of the scriptwriting / storytelling process is to change significantly from a previous state. Commonly, this is the result of confrontation with some manifestation of innermost fears.
This applies to all arcs, not just the hero's.
For example, in The Godfather (1972), Michael (the hero) "becomes" Sicilian but also, Carlo (a shape shifter) begins to show his dark side.
