Should I Avoid Cliches In Screenwriting / Storytelling?


Well, the obvious answer may seem to be yes.

But....

You may think that the hero's parents dying during childhood is a cliche. But there it is in FROZEN (2013), which is nominated for Academy Award Best Animated feature.

You may think that a guy who can't get over his girlfriend is cliche. But there it is in HER (2013), which is nominated for Academy Award Best picture.

The answer is, really, that it is all acceptable as long as the execution is good.
