Beginning a story with death?

#screenwriting #filmmaking #writing #screenplay

Death is a common way to begin a story.

On a simple level, this creates a problem. For example, in SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, it's Tom Hank's wife's death which creates the problem / gap. In GRAN TORINO, it's Walt's wife's death which causes problems.

On a deeper level, the death is symbolic for death of the older state and onset of the new. In other words, it represents the forced onset of change.
