Why does the mentor often die at the end of Act II?

One function of the mentor during Act II is to turn the hero - put in its many forms: to reverse, change, teach the lesson, get ready etc.

At the end of Act II the mentor's job is mostly done and that's why that archetype sometimes dies, separates, disappears, dissolves away etc.

It's not always the case though, and mentors often continue into Act III for a number of reasons, but usually their role changes.
